RSS Explained In Steps

Following is RSS explained in steps. Very simple and easy steps.

  1. Definition of RSS RSS – stands for Really Simple Syndication
  2. How does RSS work? RSS was mainly used by news organizations. Much like the Associated Press, once news is made, journalists and reporters feed their reports to news organizations across the globe (like newspapers, tv stations, radio stations, etc.). The information comes to those organizations through a fax like machine. RSS works the same way. Information is added to a website address created just for RSS feeds. Computers across the world who have RSS Readers installed can read these RSS feeds. All they have to do is add the website address for the RSS feed into the RSS reader program. Then, when a new article is published on that website address, the RSS reader program automatically informs the computer that there is a new article to be read!
  3. Who uses RSS? Anyone who wants information on a particular subject, industry or even keyword phrase can sign up for RSS feeds. Here are some examples:
    a) For Golfers – get the latest news on Golf from ESPN at their feed (http://sports.espn.go.com/espn/rss/golf/news)
    b) Download Music – get updates on the latest music to download at (http://pspmusicdownloads.ws/music/rss.xml)
    c) Alternative Medicine – get the latest news on alternative medicine at (http://www.alternative-medicine-blog.com/feed)
    d) SEO Techniques – get the latest updates on search engine optimization at (http://www.eckweb.com/simply-seo/seo-articles.xml) Now, you’ll notice that when you click on any of these links above, you’ll probably see a blank page. Why? That’s because these website addresses are RSS feeds and can only be seen using an RSS reader. An RSS reader is a program that you install on your computer. An easy to use RSS Reader is http://www.feedreader.com, it’s FREE!
  4. What if you don’t want to download an RSS reader? If you don’t have enough space on your computer to install another program or you just don’t want to install a program on your computer, you can still read your favorite RSS feeds at http://www.bloglines.com. It’s FREE. Open an account, and again, just add the website address of your favorite RSS feeds.
  5. How can you find RSS feeds? Easy, there are many search engines and directories out there that are just for RSS feeds. Here are just a few… Feedster.com – simply click on the small orange xml symbol to get the RSS feed website address. Search4Rss.com – just type in your subject matter and then click on the small orange RSS symbol. RSS-Locator.com, RSS-Network.com
  6. How can you use RSS for your business? If you own a business, one of the most important tasks you do, daily, is to market your business. You may market it through your business cards, networking meetings, billboards, car magnets, radio ads, tv ads, newspaper ads, websites and so many other avenues! If you are already writing a newsletter or articles or information for your website or even a press release, you can take that same information, turn it into an RSS feed and publish it. It wouldn’t cost you a dime! How many businesses turn away FREE advertising?! The truth is, MANY! Don’t be one of those many!
  7. What’s the easiest way to create your own RSS feed? Because we work with small and home based businesses, we try very hard to look for FREE and EASY ways for our clients to participate in their website marketing. The easiest (and FREE) way to create your own RSS feed is to open a blog at http://www.blogger.com. You can set up your account there to request to have the blog turned into an RSS feed (automatically). So, every time you add an article or a paragraph to your blog it will automatically turn into an RSS feed. Of course, you should add a link to your blog and your RSS feed on your website that way, others will see your articles and add your RSS feed to their RSS Reader!

So, what are you waiting for? Don't turn away FREE advertising! If you don't feel you're very tech savvy or just don't have the time to set up your own blog and RSS feed, contact us at CCS Webmarketing. For the extremely low fee of $65.00 we can set up your own blog, your own feed and link it on your website! It can't get any easier than that! We hope our article, RSS Explained In Steps has helped you to understand RSS and it's benefits to your business!
